Don´t take me wrong here but this can be caused simply because your camera display is too lighted or because the monitor has not enough light. Have you tried to calibrate your monitor?

Also, are you shooting in RAW mode?

The method that you use to download really shouldn't affect the quality of the picture. A file is a file....just as it wouldn't matter if someone gave you a Word document on a floppy, CD, or in an e-mail.

But to answer your question...I love using a Card Reader instead of my camera for to get my picture files onto my computer.

I agree - card readers are much quicker -- you just have to remember to take the card out of the reader and put it back in the camera for your next shoot (speaking from experience!!). For Windows users there is a great little app by Chris Breeze that will automate the download process from card or camera, Downloader Pro at:

As was said in a comment earlier the download would not affect the image. I have a Rebel and my images are also darker on the computer. The reason for this is that te backlighting is more intense on your camera, because of the small screen size.

You can callibrate the computer image, you can google it and get plenty of information on it. Bottom line is not to depend on the camera LCD for your final image. I believe you can adjust the brightness of the LCD also. As for downloading I would go with the reader also.
