GIMP is very powerful. Almost as good as Photoshop.

Irfanview has some basic editing features but it is IMO more of a file management tool. And excellent at those tasks.

I would agree with that. Polyview (shareware) also has rudimentary image processing, but nothing like GIMP.

Thanks for the referrals.

Someone also recommended Photomechanic.

I highly agree. If I'm not using PSCS its either Irfanview or Gimp.

We don't say that because it's not true. GIMP has been ported to the PC for a long time and can be used under the same licence.

GIMP Discussed in the May 2005 issue of Shutterbug on page 165. Talks about instilation on Win and MAC computers. See http://www.gimp.org for information about downloads and what you need. Large download need broadband connection. MAC users can order a CD from http://www.macgim.org --Rene

Here's a link to the top 5 free win editor programs:
http://www.basic-digital-photography.com/top-5-free-photo-editors-for-windows.html.

For simple, easy editing, you might also try FastStone (better than Irfanview, IMHO):
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

And theres Paint.NET:
http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/

Now for the next question. They've redone the Gimp menus so they look/act/are named almost exactly like Photoshop. It's called GimpShop, and yes, they've come up with a Windows version:
http://blog.yumdap.net/archives/20-GIMPshop-for-Windows.html.

Have I tried it? Yes, and it works. However, now I can see why there's so many posts on forums and sites all over the web asking for help and tons of tutorials. It may be free, but it would take me months to figure out how to use it (or Photoshop) and my time is more valuable than that. Also there was also suppose to be a manual downloaded at the same time, but I could never get it to work.

Now, since I've taken up so much bandwidth, might as well toss in my advice, for what it's worth (probably not even .02).

If you got the money and time, get Photoshop CS2
If not, get PE3 (!)
If not those two, it's a tie between PSP9 and PhotoImpact 10 (both are much easier to learn and darn near as powerful as CS).
From my experience, everything else is a waste of time and money.
(Sorry I'm such an opinonated old coot....)
