I have Photoshop CS2 and two fat Photoshop books and a well-above-average IQ but I haven't found a way of converting .psd files to .jpg except by using screen capture which gives pretty awful results. Is it really impossible or am I missing something?

Try this - Select File > Save as, In the dialog box select Format > JPEG (*JPG........), and then enter the file name and choose a location. If you don't see the JPEG.... option, the image is in a format that can not be saved as a JPG. One of the common formats that causes this is a photo that is 16 bits - go to Image > Mode > select 8 Bits/channel (while you're in Mode, check that RGB is selected) and try it again.

Thanks! You can convert them in 8-bit mode, not 16-bit, just as you said. Easy when somebody tells you.
