Photo saved in ‘Microsoft Paint’

To view some jpeg photos I have opened them using Microsoft Paint.
By accident I saved one of the photos whilst in that program & the size of the file reduced from 1.48Mb to 417KB. (The dimensions still stayed the same at 2048 x 1536).
I’m puzzled by the change in file size.
Can I ask ….. is the photo still of the same quality?
And ……. how is it that the file size has reduced in size when no editing was done to the photo?
