I've not done photo stitching before, but recently took a series of shots that would make a nice pano. What software do you use/recommend that would stitch these images into a single (hopefully seamless) photo?

Cheap and easy is Arc Soft Panorama Maker 2 or 3 or 4. I use #3 because it came free with the purchase of a Nikon Cool Pix.

I use PanaVue Image Assembler. I am impressed by the amount of control I have using this program. I started by downloading the demo version of the program and picked a difficult couple of shots to work with. They were shot from the rotating tower at Sea World in Florida and never were intended to be stitched together. My feeling was that if PanaVue could do the job on these pictures it could do anything. It took a lot of tweaking but to my surprise it worked! You can see the results here:

The original two images were about 30 degrees out of alignment.

Thanks for the responses, everyone! I downloaded Arc Soft Panorama Maker 4 before the other replies appeared, so that's what I'm going with here.

My first attempt is as follows:

This is the product of six photos taken with 50mm lens stitched together. I'm happy with the outcome even though I broke every rule in the book when taking the series! (Using auto-exposure, I had 4 different exposures that needed to be equalized using photoshop).

Again, I appreciate the advice!

What version of Photoshop? CS3 has a good tool for panos already built in to it.

I used Photoshop CS3. I put the photos together by masking each one. I also take pictures in a vertical framing for a horizontal picture. This is the best way stitching photos I have found

I have tried Photoshop CS3 for several panos, but never received any results that were worth keeping. There is a ton of hype over the feature, but I have yet to find an application it actually worked well on. Alot of my panos I use a sturdy tripod with the Manfrotto 303plus panoramic head, and photoshop still never made a nice pano.

I like Panorama Factory V4.4. It creates a layered photoshop image at the end. You have full control over where the stich points are. Its fast, easy to understand, and user friendly.

Anyways, everyone likes something different.

Thanks, and yes... Crater Lake. I have a 6' x 1' canvas of that shot on my office wall - really enjoy it.

I use AutopanoPro (http://www.autopano.net/). Nearly all of the stiching process can be done automatically: it finds (several) panoramas in image collections, straightening of the horizon, color correction is a breeze...
