Canon 40D and Photoshop

Well, I have recently spent big bucks upgrading from the canon 350D to the Canon 40D. I also purchased the Canon EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 IS lens. I was so excited all week to go out and shoot. I was up very early to get out the door and shoot only to be faced by a problem.

When I came home I put my CF card in the reader, the photoshop download thingy came up and I could see all my pictures. They are than downloaded to the folder of my choosen. After the downloan they attempt to import into the organizer. At which time I get a message saying they are either damaged or not supported. When I try to open them in the editor I get the same message.

I should be clear. I shoot in RAW. The photos are CR2 just like my old 350D. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. Is this a old version of photoshop problem? or is this a problem with my computer or camera?

If elements 4 could open my old CR2 files shouldn't it be able to open my new CR2 files?

Any help would be appreciated as many gigs of photos were taken today.

I appreciate any help--big time!

Have you installed the latest version of adobe camera raw so the latest raw formats are supported?

Extract the plugin from the zip and add it to the plugin folder. Restart Elements and you should be good to go.

I'm not sure. As far as elements goes I had followed the upgrade links. It seems that the latest camera raw for elements 4 is camera raw 3.7. 3.7 does not seem to support the 40D. When I download a newer version of camera raw elements says it cannot open the file because the plug in isn't valid for my version.

Does anyone know a way around this? Will I be forced to buy new Adobe software? Does anyone use the canon software that comes with the camera? IS it any good?

It sounds like Adobe does the same trick with Elements as they do with PhotoShop - When they release a new version of their SW, they no longer provide RAW converter upgrades for their earlier SW and new cameras. You're basically forced to upgrade if you want to use ACR. There is an alternative, Canon provides their RAW converter, Digital Photo Professional (DPP), on the CD that comes with the camera. This is a very effective and easy to use converter, I prefer this to ACR. In addition to RAW conversion, it has built in corrections for some of the Canon lenses, noise reduction, etc. You can either save the converted file as a TIF or do a direct transfer to PS (with DPP version 3.4.1). I suggest you give it a try and see if you're satisfied.

You need to install the SW once, then the upgrades are free and backward compatible. They just released an upgrade to DPP and the rest of their camera SW, following is a link to their site in Asia with the downloads.

That's a pain!! I upgraded from Elements 3.0 to 5.0 and I have to say that Camera Raw 4.4 is far superior to the previous version I was using, which for me made the upgrade worth it. I do very little with a shot after I've done the RAW conversion, although I'm sure some would suggest that maybe I should :D

If you search google for "canon 40d raw format and elements 4.0 support " there are various articles which support your findings and dougjs. The first link has a discussion which expand on dougjs point.

Apologies for not checking more thoroughly before my original reply!

Adobe is a bit tricky, I know they do this with PhotoShop, but I didn't know they did it with Elements as well. I wonder how many forced upgrades they sell this way.

Thank you all for the help. I truly appreciate your time and help.

For now I will use the updated DPP. I played with it for a few hours yesterday and found it to be very effective. Actaully in many ways it is better than the ACR I was using.

I still intend on purchasing the real photoshop in the future. For now, it will be DPP and elements though.

Thank you again for your help!

I have elements v6 as a trial and Cannon 40D raw's pull up fine

I never had elements before so I can not say about the previous versions--

A good way to overcome Adobe update (cost) issues, if its the RAW problem...

I use BreezeBrowser Pro. It does single and batch RAW conversion with the ability to set color balance, 8/16 bit, crop, gamma, linear, normal, and everything you could ever wish for.

What makes BreezeBrowser PRO version the tops is it's speed. It is many times faster than Photoshop, whether for RAW Conversion or in place of Bridge (file browsing, rotating, etc)

Check out the trial version and User Manual. Fully integrates with Photoshop or any other editor also. Just set your particular editor in BBPro settings.

This will save you a fortune if you need a new version of your camera raw. Check out their update frequency below. Ask and they will add it for you !

I had this same experience with my 40D. I ended up upgrading to cs4 to resolve the problem.
