.NEF Thumbnails broken

I use Photoshop Elements 6 and last night it started behaving badly. I imported a bunch of RAW files from my camera into PS Organizer - nothing unusual. But the thumbnails of these images did not open. I can see the thumbnail icon with a "broken" graphic on. At first I thought the images were bad but then realised I could open the images in "Full Edit". Also, after I opened the iamges once, the thumbnails become visible in Organizer.

Does anyone have any ideas about what's causing this?

don't know elements but it happens to me in bridge occasionally, I just rebuild the cache for that directory again and all is well
