iphoto album

When I download from camera into iphoto album, the photos start to load and then they start disappearing leaving only a blanks with a line frame where photos should have been. Later even some of my previously downloaded photos began to disappear in the same manner. I am hesitant to turn on my iphoto now for fear of losing even more. What is my problem and how do I fix it?
