Can someone help brighten up the black in this picture

Can someone help brighten up the black in this picture. Ive tried using Gimp and paint shop pro but Im not very good at using them. I know it may never be restored to a great level of quality but someone can try and help me out Id really appreciate it

What happened, flash didn't fire? The photo is way beyond repair. You can't brighten up something that's not even there. Take alook at this:

What's odd is your flash is exif-reported to have fired while your
ISO equivalent was 140, but I guess you were too far from them, even
though you had center-weighting on.

So there's very little information there, and noise/grain is immense.
But here's what I could do with Photoshop CS (I) and Noiseware
without fussing too much.

Most likely finger was on the flash
