Photoshop Elements 5.0--only in hot pink?

OK I admit, I am new to the Photoshop Elements and am still working out the bugs....but for the life of me I CANNOT figure this problem out.

When I upload my photos from my camera they are in colour....and when I make a slideshow or any other project they are in colour. However when I go to use the EDITOR section for a FULL FIX or a QUICK FIX the picture shows up in HOT PINK. When I go to change the colour swatch I only get hues of hot pink.
I even tried using the hex colour coding and it will NOT change...still just the hot pink.

What am I doing wrong? Please help before I pull ALL of my hair out!

You are in select mask mode ... in this mode you select objects using the paintbrush rather than the "normal tools"
