Adobe Lightroom

I just downloaded a trial version of Adobe lightroom. Has anyone out there tried this software and what do you think of it?

It seems to be really well designed for digital photography.

unfortunately none of the CS3 suites comes with Lightroom. very weird on Adobe's part. for the price, i wish CS3's PS Extended would have Lightroom's batch processing ease...

I have tried it and it is a nice piece of software but since I have Bibble Lite and Photoshop CS3 I see no real advantage in shelling out for Lightroom as well.

If you do not have Photoshop CS2 or CS3 and do not need this functionality then Lightroom offers a reasonable amount of post-processing capability for both RAW and JPEGs and may well be all you need. Lightroom also offers reasonable Image Management (database) facilities.

CS3, on the other hand, has Camera Raw 4.1 which has many of the Lightroom features plus the full power of Photoshop.

It just depends on what you need from a post-processing program and how much you want to spend.

If you shoot a lot of pictures, it is indispensible. I love the program. It will increase your workflow considerably.

For now. I just use it for cataloging [is this correct spelling?] my originals. With XP and 1 GB ram it is rather slow and the editing workflow doesn't really add to my current PSCS2 /bridge workflow.

However, I do like the advanced B+W/raw editing modes!

Hi! :)

You're right, LR is a really well designed piece of software, surely it's worth the price.

Is it worth being bought to? It depends on what you need in terms of image processing. If you just need to modify the GLOBAL parameters and features of a shoot, then LR is ok for you - morover it brings, as already written here, a good images database management tool. Moreover, LR allows to do batch processing (i.e. apply the same set of changes to a whole set of images in just one click). You would need PS instead if you're used to apply, let's say, pixel-level changes :)

BTW, LR handles my whole workflow.

Hope this helps.

Ciao

I have both Lightroom 1.2 and PS CS3 Extended, and use and like both. For some photos everything needed can be accomplished in Lightroom. Others need the additional tweaking only CS3 can provide. Previously I'd used Elements.

But I have to confess... the organizing part is still the worst mess. Lightroom confused me having previously used Elements. And now CS3 continues the trend with Bridge. It doesn't help that the Photoshop guys seem to tout whatever book they're currently selling. I'd like a real world opinion, void of commercialism, on how to best organize and tag my libraries once and for all. It seems I have the tools, but no clear direction on what might *really* be best. And best for the long term.

Ideas guys and gals?

I like Lightroom. the file managing needs time to get used to but editing capabilities are very good.

Hi guys,

I think that LR can't be a substitute for PS; altought that LR is a great piece of software there are waaaaay to much things that you can only do in PS.

The way i use it:
-i shoot lots of pictures in 1 day and i open them as a separate catalog. when importing leave the photos at their current location(first time i searched for photos the whole hard drive:))
-u can flag, organize, stack, give stars to the best pictures and then easily search for them...LR is very good at that
- tweak the photos in the development module...here the controls are very intuitive and there are some new controls...some guys say that brightness and contrast for exemple are not touched anymore. Check the Tone Curve...very powerfull feature and the history, comparing and snapshot too.

There are huge amount of tutorials(plus great free ones) that can get you started....i started diggin it and i'm very pleased.

So...LR for great organizing and overall adjustements and PS for the rest:)

I have been using Lightroom since the beginning. It is a great piece of software. I do about 90% of my work in Lightroom and the rest in PSCS3. I shoot mostly raw but it is still good for those doing jpg. You can make non destructive edits keeping the original as is. It allows you to organize you files and keep up with them. I love it and would not want to be without it.

I am the biggest lightroom fan on the planet. :D

It has saved me hundreds of hours of work this year. It could not have appeared at a better time. I have no idea what I would have done without it. The web galleries alone are worth the price.

If you have a website, and have absolutely no web design skills, lightroom is a godsend. I was going to pay someone to do my website, I didn't have to when Lightroom came out, I could add flash galleries in seconds instead of having someone else to do it for me and wait days.

Like this for instance, a flash gallery with music in the background:
