Reducing file size

Post Sun Feb 18, 2007 1:22 am

What is a good method/software for reducing file sizes and retaining a good quality. I would like to modify my pics to fill a normal window in Pbase without scrolling and keep them at a minimal size. I see great looking full size pics in galleries yet still under 100 MB. I use photoshop for editing and have also tried ACDSee for resizing.

My RAW files aren't even 100MB, what kind of files are you using? Most people just use jpegs resized to 800 x whatever (800 being the longest size).
Nikon D300, D200
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, 55mm f/1.4 micro, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G DX, 80-200 f/2.8D
Apple PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3

If you have to do a lot of pictures at one time, look for the free program IrfanView. I'll do that when I want to get a lot of pics online for others to view in a hurry. It will batch process all the photos, resizing and altering the quality accordingly.

Otherwise, as another poster indicated, you want to downsize to about 800x600 (or 800x533 if you are using a 3:2 format camera, such as most DSLRs). When I manually downsize in Photoshop Elements, I use a target quality of 9, which is still very good quality for web use.

Looking at the stats on my own gallery, where I post most everything either 800xWhatever or 640xWhatever, my average image size is 156 KB.
