I'm new to photo editing. Trying to black out background

I'm new to photo editing. I am trying to "black out" the background on a photo so that the only remaining image is the person. Does anyone know which software will allow me to do this? Thank you.

Photoshop and use either the masking or extract feature, depending on the detail to eliminate the existing background.
