Is it explained in the manual? Or take a look at the review of the camera over at http://www.dpreview.com - Phil usually comments on things like this.

Try PreviewExtractor a small utility that extracs a JPG from the RAW file
Also, RawShooter Esssentials, a free raw converter can be handy for this

I have the same problem. My PC doesn't see RAW files on the camera, but it does see JPEG. What if I just want to put my RAW files in a temp directory in order to process them in PS CS2? Then other RAW converters won't help me. I just need to be able to see the RAW images. Whatever is on that card: windows explorer should be able to see it, whether it recognises the file format or not?

I have a 300D and my camera shows both raw and jpg, when i connect the camera to a tv via video in ,the tv shows both raw plus jpg and becareful about posting on that site dpreview, there are some real nasty arseholes that use that site and as far as viewing raw files, your camera software comes with a raw veiwer.Photoshop also has a plugin for raw files

Yeah sure, but if my PC can't see the RAW files, then Photoshop can't either. If I browse the camera with windows explorer, I only see the JPEG files, not the RAW files. I can't even get them on my PC.

raw files

when you have a nikon digital, go to the nikon website and download the free "nikon viewer program", it will display raw images for you. To work on nikon pictures, nikon capture is $100 Canadian and is better than adobe! I've stoped using adobe except for cropping.
I shoot Raw images and then save the best as tiff and jpeg using adobe.

search in pbase under "emcphotoart"

If you are running XP, you can download a RAW browser of Microsoft. Here's the link

thanks for the link Sheila,
I downloaded it but still can only see the thumbnail along the bottom while viewing in Filmstrip mode.

Should I be able to see the image larger?

Ruth, this looks like it's only a thumbnail viewer if I understand right. You'd still need a program that reads RAW to edit with, before you'll be able to enlarge. Canon, and Minolta have basic editors that can be downloaded, it would seem Nikon would also. But guess you'd know that.

Here's one I was able to find you might check:
http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawsh ... ntials.asp

Also, here's another microsoft link to a variety of programs, you might find a free program or trial version.

Its not only a thumbnail viewer. It should also show large when clicking on the image. Sorry, but I have no idea why it is not showing the large image.

I'm no expert, but as far as I'm aware, each manufacturer will have their own version of the RAW format. Many standard applications won't support all versions of RAW. You said you use Photoshop - I don't think Elements supports RAW. You should have software that was supplied with the camera to process RAW, as a previous poster stated, for Nikon.

Your computer has set "hide system files" and it thinks the RAW file extension is a system file.

Go to 'My Computer'

Click 'Tools'

Select 'Folder Options'

Select 'View Tab'

Scroll down until you get the 'Show Hidden Files' thing and then check that box

Windows Explorer will now display system files and not hide them.

I found out this trick the hard way

The camera should have came with the correct software. If you bought it used, you can get it from Canon. Or, find someone who has it and borrow it to install on your computer. I use Canon's DPP program to convert my raw files to tiff or jpg formats.
