first time photo editing help

i am trying to for eg; cut out say a person from 1 picture and paste or copy onto a totally different picture or put it onto a different background.
also what software would be best for this.

Pick up Photoshop Elements 2 or 3. There are good deals on these packages now on the net.
Read through the manual and follow the steps outlined. Or pick up a copy of Photoshop Elements 2 or 3 Users Guide. There are many other books to get you started with excellent examples. Once you get acquainted, there is no limit to what you can do.
