What is the best photo editing software for Mac?

Post Tue Sep 13, 2005 2:58 pm

I have grown fond of Picasa in Windows, so much that it had replaced Photoshop as my photo editor of choice. The straighten tool in Picasa is far better than Photoshop and the sharpen feature in Picasa is also superior to Photoshop. On top of that, if you want to create an 8x10 image or a 5x7 image for print, these features make it easy to resize for print.

I have recently purchased a Mac and while I have Photoshop CS for Mac, I miss the features of Picasa and easy of use. iPhoto has been a huge disappointment and I have actually grown to really dislike it. I store my photos on an external drive and iPhoto wants to import them onto my internal drive and reorganize them. It is quite fustrating to say the least.

Anyway, I would like to hear some feedback from Pbase users on what you think the best photo editing software. I am looking for an application that can resize for print, has good straighten, crop, sharpen tools and doesn't require a total reorg of my 10GB catalog of photos.

In photoshop, the crop tool actually lets you select proportions and it will resize the image for you to get it ready for print. As for sharpening in photoshop, I like to use the unsharpened mask filter as it gives you the best possible control over the sharpening of the image.

A quick tip for iPhoto. You can allow iPhoto to create the library on your computer. What you can then do is move it to your external HD, then place an alias to the new location of the iPhoto library where the folder was originally created. The thing I do not like about iPhoto is that it imports everything into a library. It does not give me much control over how my photos are organized. As an alternative you might want to check out iView Media Pro.

Hope this little info helps.

Wow, iView Pro looks promising.

In Photshop I always use "image size". I guess I need more guidance on the "crop" feature of Photoshop. Where can I select "5x7, 8x10" etc...?

OK, you rule! iView Pro is by far the best tool I have seen on Mac's for photos and comes the closest I have seen on a Mac to matching Picasa.

Try Adobe Lightroom, I like the crop/straighten tool much more than the one in CS2.

I cant say its the best, but it is GOOD. Try Apple Aperature. They have a web site and a free 30 day demo. It keeps files where they already are and uses links to the files so you don't move them or duplicate them ever. And, it can look at photos on other volumes, like an external hard drive. Please let me know what you find out, I have the same concern myself but have not settled on a solution

Thanks

I totally agree, I just recently purchased a mac and aperture. Granted I have not used it long but so far it is incredible!

I second it, Aperture is sweet. But after using the Lightroom beta, I may have to lean towards it for easy of use. It's release will be in a week or two.
