exiftool

Post Sat Aug 13, 2005 6:29 pm

Exiftool is a command line exif editor written in perl. It can do almost anything to or from exif data in several different image formats. Lots of bells and whistles, I am just starting to get familiar with it. Great documentation also. I installed cygwin first (a unix like interface for pc). They're both free!

Cygwin gives you a unix like shell from which you can invoke exiftool.

I found exiftool at http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
there is a cygwin version.

Cygwin is at http://www.cygwin.com/

I don't remember if the perl module is part of the standard install, but you can install it from the same site.

If this is all common knowledge, please disregard.

Thanks for the post. I'm glad you find ExifTool useful!

I don't think ExifTool is common knowledge among PC users (the only OS I know where Perl doesn't come pre-installed), so posts like this help.

The nice thing about Perl is that it is platform independent, so the same package works on the PC under Cygwin, or on a Macintosh, or on any Unix box...

I'm only posting this for consistency, not only is exiftool available for windows now, there is a graphical interface available for it that works great at:

There's a link to the latest exiftool on this page also, along with instructions on installing it all.

You might also check OPanda viewer/editor here: http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm

If you're using Firefox, they also have add on viewers. Just be sure if you're running FF3 it's compatible since many of the plug ins haven't been updated for it yet.
