Ok I know I have to use a tripot to take night scenes. But what if I want to take shots in an event(eg. Autoshows and night flea markets) where I have to move around constantly and cannot afford the time, nor the weight of the equipment?

Flash will just kill the lighting as you know, and is definitely not what I want.

so is there any technique I can try?

An image stabilized lens will give you 2-3 stops.

And then go for the fastest film you can buy.

Seriously, don't go out and buy an image stabilized lens. Instead, simply brace your camera against something solid, a tree, stop sign, ground.... Works well, and is quite cheap.

Good suggestion. For a little more flexibility, you could try one of those little pocket-sized wire tripods, which can, for example, be wrapped around a handy lamppost and held in position manually. I've made successful exposures of several seconds this way.
