Basic Questions: Scanners and software

Hello,

I need to convert a load of paper text documents into .doc or (less preferably) .pdf format.

Can anyone recommend a good (preferably cheap!) scanner / software combination that could does this well with accurate results.

Not cheap, but found some decent-looking scanning software called OmniPage: http://www.scansoft.com/omnipage/

Now looking for a decent sheetfed scanner...
