I want to buy a scanner which will successfully scan fine line engravings (usually steel engravings) and antiqe maps as well as photographs. My older scanner is particularly poor as there appears to be interference because of the closely spaced lines. Can anyone help please?

Use a camera and take a picture. Usually on anything with texture, you want to use an angled light source to create shadows, and thus, emphasize the textures. Can't do that with a scanner directly, but you could by scanning a photo of the item.
