Medium format scanner - Epson 3170 or 4490, any difference?

Post Mon Apr 02, 2007 10:28 pm

I am getting a cheap flatbed scanner for my 6*6 film digitizing. I have done some homeworks and have targeted the option to epson 3170 or 4490. I have tested a 4490 and I found out it is exactly as promising as I expect, though a used 3170 may cost just half (or less, on ebay) of brand new 4490.

So I want to see if there is any major/obvious difference between 3170 and 4490 regarding the scan quality, processing speed, and software? My intention is to get a 3170 if they are funtionally identical. Any other suggestion in selecting/using them? Many thanks!

Below are my test scans with 4490:

The 4990 has a 4.0 D max value...and you can scan up to an 8x10 size film. However, this scanner takes a lot of time to "warm up"- it also is a LOT more expensive. I use both these models, however I scan live objects- I'm not using it traditionally.
