briefly this is my situation: On a project I was on in a slum in brazil I distributed about 30 disposable cameras to slumdwellers. The film was developed and the prints were given to whoever took the film. now I have the negatives.
My plan was to scan them in myself. realistically I can't do this because my scanner is broken and I have no time. But I'd still like to have the images and maybe perhaps pursue an exhibition.

My question to you guys is: should I ship the negatives out to have someone do it for me?

If so where should I send it? I have priced it out and everywhere I went seemed to ask about USD400 to do it. I'd like to ideally have scans big enough where I can print something atleast 8x12

If it will cost that much should I just buy a film scanner and do it myself.

appreciate your help.

If you have the time, you'll get better scans doing them yourself, but be aware of the time it will take.
