JULY 2011 CHALLENGE: ARCHITECTURE IN BLACK AND WHITE

Post Thu Jun 30, 2011 1:01 pm

July's Monthly Challenge is a scavenger hunt again, or maybe a treasure hunt, depending on your PoV, based architectural images. These may buildings, dwellings, groups of structures, bridges, towers, sheds, factories or architectural details, depending on you interpretation. We live surrounded by architecture and objects, flowers or sea shells have their own architecture. There many creative possibilities with this challenge, and the possibilities are almost endless.

July can be a busy month for many of us, so the photos don't have to be taken on a strictly daily basis. Neither do they have to be posted on the same day as they were taken. The only stipulation is that 31 photos corresponding to 31 be covered and posted some time during the month.

A few rules / guidelines for the challenge:

Post fresh photos only (no dipping in the archives).

Don’t forget to leave comments for other participants in the challenge. No posting only please, the challenge is about having fun and camaraderie, and to learn from other participants, so check out the images other participants post and comment on at least some of them.

Good luck everyone! Let your imagination run free, and let's have some fun on our architectural journey together this month.

Best Wishes,

Walter

The New York Life Insurance Company assigned architect Alajos Hauszmann, to plan the company's hall building in Budapest. Hauszmann, with Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl planned a four story eclectic palace, with a café on its ground floor. The building and the café opened on October 23, 1894. The statues and other ornaments on the front side of the building, as well as the ground floor café's 16 imposing devilish fauns, each one beside the café's sixteen windows, are the works of Károly Senyey.
The building was nationalized during the communist era. After the collapse of socialism, the palace was bought by Italian Boscolo Hotels in February 2001. The building was totally renovated, and reopened on May 5, 2006 as a 107 room luxury hotel, with the Café, also totally renovated, on its ground floor.

I´m not sure if I can participate the whole month, but let me start here!

Greetings from Budapest

Hi everyone after a long absence. I am going to follow Boris' lead and get a jump on this as I have a hectic five days coming up and tomorrow is Canada Day. Yeh us!
This is the back of Penrose, originally the Rockwood Lunatic Asylum opened in the mid 1800s and finally closed in 1997. More images of Penrose and a much better history to follow over the next few days. This is going to be fun.
Cheers,
Michael

Entrance to a restaurant off of Clearwater Beach, FL. Sorry, it was a little chilly for the bikini...
I'll be in for as long as I can. Been gone too long.

I'm excited about this challenge. I took quite a few black and white photos today. Here is the first...
