Replication at Smug Mug

Hi,

I have been with Pbase since 2002. I am still a paying member with almost a year left. I probably will extend for a year or two more, maybe call it a 15 year plan. Wow, that's a long time! I have thousands of photos here, a community and memories. But Pbase is still the same. I know that is exactly what some like, but unfortunately, the times are a changing. I have started to replicate my galleries at smugmug and it is great.

My goals.
1. More professional look, with ability to store full size images but with adequate protection. This now serves as a cloud backup too, but I also use Amazon Prime.
2. Ability to view through all the touch devices. Smart phone, tablets etc.
3. E-commerce. An ability to sell out of the box. It was easy. Set my prices and that is it. I have already got a few purchases in the first few days.
4. Search tool

I would love to hear from others who moved and the pros and cons, tips that you might have.

Not a bad idea, I to am putting more and more on Smugmug all in large format size.
My reason is I am not sure how long PBase will be online and wanted a back up plan with more space.
I really do not like FlickR thou I have an account there, Smug seems much better and easier to work with on styles.

I am staying with PBase as long is it is around, the price is right and I have friends here.
It seems ashame that it has not kept up with the basic functions like speed and uploading, I do not need social media options here.
I can not replicate everything to Smug from here since some stuff I can not find that I loaded here years ago.

Never hurts to have a back up plan just in case.

For me the main reason to have a photography web site is so that people look at the images. I had a smugmug site 2008-09 which generated very little traffic. I currently have my portfolio site on 500px which also generates little traffic. My flickr site which I have had since 2007, is and always has been dead in the water. My average daily hits on PBase however are between 1,500 and 2,000 per day. I would not consider moving unless I could find a site that actually has comparable traffic to PBase. Also I find the cost of smugmug to be too high: "BUSINESS $25/MO BILLED ANNUALLY OR $35.00 BILLED MONTHLY".

As for duplicating my PBase site, from day one on PBase I have kept folders corresponding to my galleries, so I have every image I have ever uploaded, over 13,000. I did this not only as a backup, but to find images more easily. If PBase were to go down permanently, I could easily replicate the site if I wanted to.

I think one major reason that many subscribers stay on PBase is the sense of community and the many friendships, something conspicuously absent from smugmug, flickr or 500px.

Just my $0.02 gentlemen.

Walter

SmugMug, you get your own domain so looks more professional. Only plus I see. I know some here on Pbase have somehow gotten rid of the Pbase bar making their pages look more professional.

For the price Pbase is good...I plan on staying. I have gotten requests for my photos to be used, so they do get found via search engines. It would be nice if Pbase could somehow have the ability for folks to purchase prints.
