nudity/pornography

Post Mon Jan 04, 2010 5:06 pm

There should be a separate private catagory/gallery for all the nudity/pornography on Pbase! You don't have to look elsewhere on the web for it, just browse Pbase! I'm just tired of viewing PAD and seeing it. It's offensive, I want to see beautiful photography, not a bunch of women's private parts which is just what most of the photos are, no artistic talent! There seems to be more and more of it too-just take a photo of your nude girlfriend, wife, etc and post it on Pbase!

I agree. Not saying to necessarily ban it, but relegate it to it's own category. Although in truth, I'd actually like to see the real hardcore porno banned. Not sure where to draw the line between artful shots and porno, but some of these pics are pretty raw, with no attempt to be artful.

Although I'm ABSOLUTELY against any form of censorship, I agree that the Pbase owners could perhaps set-up one "special" gallery, with a "private" access, delivered only to people asking personnally for it, with yet another personnal password !

I don't beleive in censorship, as it's -IMHO- sooooo difficult to draw a line between ART and PORNOGRAPHY ! The problem of banning "icey subjects" is coming up for many other subject: alcohol, tobbaco, etc... We live in a world where the personnal freedom is everyday more and more restricted, IMO not for real good reasons, but for the governements -all of them- to have a stronger "grip" on the populations !

As an "amateur" photographer for more than 40 years, I remember spending hours near kindergarden and schoolyards, shooting kids playing..... Just IMAGINE doing that nowadays !?!?! ...even in Europe (Switzerland), where -I hope- people are not yet gone as paranoid as in the USA...

My opinion is that, if we let censorship grow a bit more, we soon won't be able to take our cameras outside...

Just my 2 cents,
J-P.

There is no doubt that nude photography is a valid art form and no doubt that some of us find it offensive or unhelpful and prefer not to view it. At present if browsing Pbase for inspiration e.g. popular galleries, coming across nude images is unavoidable in Pbase. This is what i find unacceptable, I cannot browse through Pbase with my children present or recommend it to other people for whom this may be an issue. We need to have a choice.

I have been trying out DPReview's new gallery system and am very pleased that they have included the ability to label images and galleries as "safe" for everyone to view. Not only can you filter browsing results according to this filter but you can set your user account to filter automatically when you are logged in. DPR also allows users to report images which should be labelled "unsafe" removing some of the burden of policing the site form the host. I don't know if content filtering software can force the filter on as they can for search engine image browsing but this would be a bonus. Many other image hosts seem to be safer to browse from this perspective than Pbase, in most cases potentially "unsafe" images cannot be viewed except by logged in viewers, a very helpful feature.

I have been using Pbase for 8 years and this issue has got worse over that time, to the point where I am considering closing my account. I would love to stay with Pbase, but if this situation does not improve I'm afraid I cannot. I realise the team have a lot of people clamouring for a lot of features but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest for me.

It was not like this even year ago. It started lately and really become very annoying. There always been some amount of it, but not at this extent. I really starting feel, like if you do not shoot "skin', you're don't exist on PBase. It's just sprouting more and more. Not nude images are disappearing in the sea of all kind of full/semi nude model shots of very questionable artistic quality. Fine. People always were attracted to it, but I really do not like it to be so dominating. I really don't know how to deal with that, but it starting getting worrisome. ON a single page of latest PAD or new galleries shot of 12 images 3 to 5 are from these type of photography. What? All people shooting different subject already left PBase and went to other Photo sharing sites? :-)

Happy Shooting

Here I also give the stress to create the separate galleries for the porn pictures. It is very shame full when you are searching the post and porn pictures appears in front of brother and sister.Thank you very much for the separate gallary.

This has been so talked to death previously and it seems to come up again every once in a while.

For those who aren't aware, Slug and Emily talked quite some time ago about a content filtering system, a maturity filter if you will.. I don't know what happened to it, but it would have allowed us to continue to post nudes and allow people with children or at work to turn on the mature filter so they don't see mature content. As photographers, we would have to be diligent in marking our photos correctly. If we didn't, then PBase sentries would mark our accounts as "unsafe for public viewing" and our images wouldn't be shown in public areas.

But that didn't happen. So, don't blame photographers like my self who DO POST NUDES but agree that PBase's current system isn't good enough to promote safe viewing by minors. I refuse to stop posting my creative nudes just because PBase hasn't improved or implemented their content filters.

See this thread for a previous discussion about nudes in public areas, which I participated and proposed solutions:

Sad that some people here equate nudity with pornography.

Just one more thought !

Post Fri Jul 09, 2010 3:50 pm

I've been a member of Pbase since May 2000, and although I've been looking at many images, about a vast variety of subjects, I NEVER came across a PORNOGRAPHIC image here !

Why do you think I've never seen a PORN image in Pbase ? Could it be because I've not LOOKED FOR IT ?

I guess each person has a different interpretation of pornography. That's all!

Who crosses the line...and who doesn't...it's up to somebody's point of view.

But I do agree...pbase should install a filter for nude pictures...just like in modelmayhem.

In modelmayhem they have that filter...plus they have a separate contest for "18+" pictures. I like their feature where non members cannot view 18+ pictures...only members can (by turning on a switch).

Cheers!

Danny :)

The OP represents one possbile point of view.

That said, if the OP were to consider the "context" of the Internet in general and the context under which PBase operates, then I would suggest that the OP misses the point. Consider what one can find doing a Google search or a search of most any kind on the Internet. PBase is a small operation and it's handlers do a good job of identifying what most would call offensive images whilst leaving the majority of images untouched and uncensored. I call it common sense along with the fact that you can never satisfy everyone.

PBase is what it is, and this means that one is going to encounter a wide array of photographic content. If they find it offensive, the most expedient thing they can do is find a different hosting site.

I just got a bunch of my galleries blocked. I respect pbase's decision. I do not have to agree with them or like their decision. However, what I am dumbfounded is, a slight peep of skin, I get an email from pbase informing me that, the gallery is blocked.

At some point, why bother to post here. I have no problem tagging all my gallery NSFW or something like that. Then viewers will have their choice what they want to see. Now, someone in pbase decides unilaterally what they think some people will be offended, and then blocking those images from the public areas. IF that is not censorship, what is censorship?

Btw, putting nudity and pornography together, is insulting.

I can only fully agree on Nudity and Pornography putted together is an offence; Some should avoid museum too; The right also on the non informing way of Pbase censor apply;

It would be helpful if pbase's administrators did what so many other photography websites do these days: when a member uploads an image, let us have a tickbox where we can indicate that the image is "sensitive" or "not workd safe."

I've seen it at work on other sites and it's simple and easy and people generally use it sensibly.

It would be better than some of the idiotic unilateral decisions pbase's administrators make: I had a gallery blocked because a model had the top button of his fly undone www.pbase.com/cwest/justin Yet another images that are EXTREMELY gratuitous are permitted, searchable and appear in the populars...for example http://www.pbase.com/dudedelux/the_red_chair_preview
