Ummmm - I don't get it... Hit counter question

Maybe this question was answered, but I'm not getting it...

A gallery that I just uploaded is registering hits, the same amount of photos actually.

It was stated that pbase no longer counts iteslf.

What is it counting then and why?

Because being a supporter you show up in the recently updated gallery list. Click the blueish purple "galleries" button at the top of the page to see where I'm talking about.
