Some thumbnails show up as white rectangle

Post Mon Sep 22, 2003 7:43 pm

I am having a strange problem when I try to view my galleries from my office. Some thumbnails are showing up as white rectangles. I've never had a problem like this before. From home, the pages look fine and I suspect when you try to load my pages, they will look fine as well ( http://www.pbase.com/appelm ). I am thinking its because I am behind a firewall at work but this has not been a problem for me before.

Being the natural hacker, I viewed the source for the pages and have noticed the following. Only thumbnails that come from "mikoga.image.pbase.com" are not working. If I click on the thumbnail, the pictures show up fine, including the "Small" image.

I tried taking the url of a particular thumbnail that wasn't working, ie, http://mikoga.image.pbase.com/u33/appel ... G_0283.jpg and putting that in the address bar of my browser. My browser redirects to http://192.33.179.16:15871/cgi-bin/bloc ... 1811976750 which produces a blank page. I suspect that my company's firewall is causing this redirect but I am not certain.

Interestingly, if I just edit the "mikoga" in the above link to "mikeli" or any of the other "mikxxxx" the thumbnail works fine. For some reason, the mikoga only is getting redirected.

Any ideas why this is? Anyone else experience this sort of problem?

Slug any way to move my thumbnails out of mikoga?

Thanks,
Marc

I've noticed that mishoga does this for me also:

Everything looks fine to me! Take a look at the following article, it may relate to your problem:

Maybe "mikoga" doesn't like you? :) On a serious note, maybe "mikoga" was having some glitches that was eventually sorted out. I can see the pic at http://mikoga.image.pbase.com/u33/appel ... G_0283.jpg fine in both IE 6 and Opera 7.11

These pages still aren't working for me... Its as if these particular servers are blocked for some reason. There must be some keyword or someting on these servers that's causing my office firewall to block them. At least I'm guessing its the firewall that's causing this...

Ok I confirmed its my firewall...

If I go to http://mikoga.image.pbase.com , I get a standard message from my company firewall saying this site is blocked because "The Websense category "Personal Network Storage and Backup" is filtered."

However, if I go to http://mikeli.image.pbase.com, I get through the firewall and get a message from the apache server saying "Forbiden" because naturally normal users aren't supposed to go to that root directory. The point is I got through the firewall.

So something on mikoga and mishoga servers (if indeed these are servers) is marked as part of the Websense category "Personal Network Storage and Backup" but not on the other servers..

I'm really clueless about this stuff and am just suggesting this as a possibility based on my observations... Am I correct that this Websense category is specified on the individual servers? Can this be changed?

well I keep teaching myself more and more... I see there's a company called websense that assigns websites to various categories and that's what my company firewall is using. I registered on the websense website and looked up a few websites to see what they are categorized as... here are some interesting results:

URL: mikoga.image.pbase.com Category: Personal Network Storage and Backup
URL: mikeli.image.pbase.com Category: This site is not categorized by Websense
URL: http://www.pbase.com Category: Cultural Institutions (* funny* )

so for some reason mikoga got categorized (correctly I guess) as "personal network storage and backup" which I guess is a category that my firm blocks. But luckily for me, for some reason it thinks pbase is a "cultural institution" which is why I can get into pbase..

The peculiar thing is why this has all of a sudden happened. I've been using pbase from work for years.. Has something changed on pbase to cause this? Are pictures suddenly being stored on mikoga now?

Websense is crazy. They normally use Google listing for their categorisation effort. They craegorised my website as "Hacking and warez" because I had a project that tracked website that were hacked into.

If I am not mistaken, "mikeli" is a new addition to pbase load balancing system. Hence it has not been around long enough to be categorised. Don't ask me why pbase is a " Cultural Institution". You are lucky that it is so :)

Even though Websense does the categorisation, it is your company that finally decides what is to be seen by the employeers. So they must have decided recently that you guys should no longer surf to sites that are "Personal Network Storage and Backup"?
