Questions from a new member..

Post Mon Sep 01, 2003 10:17 am

Hi There,

I currently host a box with my Gallery on it.. However due to my isp and forwarding and natting and so on, its very slow!

I have alot of images (about 200meg) that I want to upload, but fear for backup reasons images may be lost after reading some posts, is this a common concern? I dont want to host my images with fear of this..

Also, whats uptime like for the galleries??

Further, can I also hide the galleries from people? I dont want them listed in the Galleries Index and I dont want them searchable.. Is this a option with a paying account?

Any other things I should know??

I live in Australia...

Cheers

I am not one of the admins so what I say may not be fully correct. Someone please do correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think there has ever been any data loss in pbase.

I can't give a number but it is pretty good. There was a bad outage for a day or two a couple of days ago, but it is a very rare occurance. Now that slug (one of the admins) has got new Oracle boxes and Oracle support, it hopefully would not happen again.

The way it work now is that you can specify a gallery or individual images as private. However this does not mean password protected invisibility. it just means that the album/image will not be listed in your root gallery. So the only way your visitors can know of its existence is if you give them the URL. As of now, you can email slug to remove the gallery from search results. However, if I am not mistaken when a gallery is updated, it gets listed in the "latest updated gallery". Maybe slug can even disable that. Slug has however mentioned that password protection is on its way and is one of the top to-do feature support.

Typical stuff - porn not allowed, stealing not allowed :)
Good thing about pbase hosting - load balancing, direct linking, not bandwidth limitation, very highly customisable interface for your gallery as long as you can get your hands dirty with CSS or you can even use some standard style sheets.

Slug and team are great with support. Even if a problem crops up, it is rooted out soon.

There hasn't been any images lost but you should always make multiple back up copies of your work on your own computer and cd's.And I emphasize verify all back copies for each photo. Don't let a bad cd burn hose you.

You can make your galleries private and they won't show up in any of the lists. You will have to give people the url. But be aware the admin can look through any private gallery so don't try uploading stolen images or illegal content.

Once you get settled in you'll find PBase to be a great service, really easy to use and a lot of great works here to inspire you. http://www.pbase.com/galleries?view=popular

Other than that your trial account will have a 10 meg limit and thirty days that you can upload and play with for free.

Great advice for the unweary, Bill. Way too many people lost all of their photo collections when photo hosting site http://www.photopoint.com shut down without notice. People complained, so Photopoint offered to retrieve their photos, burn a CD, and send them to the owner..... all for $25 per CD!

Be safe... backup... backup... backup...
