I think that topics similar to this one appear periodically in this forum. It's always interesting to get informed and, why not, to find by chance a photography site which might be more suitable for our needs.
I don't intend discussing the choice of many people who decided to leave PBase to move to other sites where they prefer posting their photos.
I suppose it depends on everyone's priorities and approaches. I can speak only for myself, of course.
I don't care for an overdose of social networks links and interaction. Actually I'm not on any popular social network.
I have visited 500px and I have tried to understand how it works. What I have noticed, at a first explorative look is that, generally speaking, the quality of photos is good, much better than the average on Flickr, where in my humble opinion a majority of people post it doesn't matter what, from the less accurate snapshot to the family pictures taken with a smartphone. I'm sure that there are excellent photos there, but they are a little lost in the huge mass of less appealing images.
What doesn't persuade me too much in 500px is the rigid layout, which makes all the galleries alike, without any option of personalization; I don't like the automatic crop of the general display pages which privilege a square format; I don't like the presence of those annoying( for me) buttons I like, I dislike, in perfect Facebook style.
Honestly 500px doesn't appeal me, because it doesn't offer me a real alternative to PBase.
On PBase I can personalize my layout completely; I can create subgalleries, add text and do practically everything. The only limit is the dimension of the photos, which are by default 800px max. They could be bigger, at least a little. But of course we can post the original in the dimension we like, hoping that the visitors chose the original size, not the default one.
It's true that there is less traffic on PBase now, but I still think that quality is better than quantity.
I repeat, it's just my personal opinion without importance. There is nothing which can be suitable for everyone in absolute. Still I think PBase offers what it's difficult to find elsewhere, if one likes personalizing galleries and pages.
Best regards
