For me a web site has to have traffic. You can have the fanciest site with all the bells and whistles, but if no one looks at it then what is the use? I have always liked PBase for this reason. My site regularly gets traffic. A gallery I am loading currently is getting a lot of views and is ranked highly on google:
http://www.pbase.com/amoxtli/naval_air_ ... pring_2015 Another feature I like about PBase is the high degree of customization with CSS, adding video, gif, etc. that is possible and the way that galleries can be managed and moved.
Both traffic and customization are completely absent from sites like flickr. During the great PBase outage of 2009 I was on smugmug and hated it. The only viewers seemed to be other PBase refugees. Already the name of the site is a turn-off. I haven't had much luck on other sites such as zenfolio, etc. I do have a site on 500px, but it does not generate regular traffic either, but clients have said they like it:
http://www.amoxtli.net/So traffic and customization are excellent on PBase, as is the community of photographers. Unfortunately management and customer service are absent and development is non-existent. I have never understood why, but that's been the case since I joined in February 2006. Features such as geotagging have been broken since 2013 and there is no contact whatsoever with management. Disconcerting when you consider how much time and effort has been put into the sites we have here. You would think that when you have a good product and a captive audience you would take care of things, but inexplicably that is not the case. Hope things change, but I am not optimistic.
Best,
Walter
