A Discussion on a working NSFW filter

Post Sun Jan 04, 2015 4:01 pm

I think it is time to open a discussion on Pbase having a working NSFW filter like every other major photo site. I emailed Emily about this but I have never heard back. I was seeking some insight to what Pbase's policy even is.

In the past month, the popular galleries have been dominated by hard and soft porn. Some of us can't call this art. We are not prudes. Some of it is even called porn by the photographers or at least the models are porn "stars." Art is subjective. I understand that.

I find it interesting that these galleries get voted to the top with very few comments. Obviously, even the people voting for them aren't willing to say they did.

Here is how other photos sites handle nudity or semi nudity. The photographer marks a level for his gallery. It can be something like "safe", "moderate" or "NsFW." The user then picks a level they're comfortable with and selects it and they see what they want and don't see what they don't want to see.

The other part is since you must join the site to use this feature, "moderate" and "NSFW" are never visible to visitors. That is not the case now with Pbase. Anyone can see these galleries. Kids can see them. Deviants, and they're out there, can see them.

I think this is a fair solution for everyone involved. I don't know how much programming it would take to implement or if Pbase even wants to implement it but I think they should let us know what their direction is going to be.

There are people now calling this site PornBase. If no other reason, than to respect the photographers who don't want to be associated with porn or nudity or even "art" nudity, I would think Pbase would want to have a working filter.

Which brings me to my last point. There is a NSFW filter on Pbase. However, it is not a public filter and as far as I can tell, it doesn't even block anything. I have it enabled and I see every new nude gallery that comes out and gets voted up to the top.

Please don't tell me to just not click on these galleries. I don't. That's not the point. The point is that it's there to begin with whether I don't want to see it or not. I think everyone's viewpoint should be respected and I think the way other photo sites handle it is fair to everyone.

I am in full agreement with the request. It is disheartening to see the NSFW gallery cover images in the populars and know that those galleries are available for any and all perusers, members and non-members. PBase being known as PornBase defeats its purpose as a welcoming social media site for those who find sexual objectivization objectionable. PBase needs a working NSFW filter in place.

+1. The sooner this filter is implemented the better. Lately I've been very hesitant sending the link to our galleries to friends and colleagues, purely because of all the nudes that appear on the screen very easily. Being associated with Pornbase is not what we want to hear. We're no prudes either, but it shouldn't be bang slapped in the face as soon as you go to PBase...

Emily & co: please do something about this. As said, it shouldn't be that difficult.

I don't go into popular galleries very often, but after this topic came up went to check it out and was shocked to see images that only a deviant would enjoy. As an art enthusiast I do believe I have an eye for beauty - this stuff is NOT beautiful and I am embarrassed to be associated with it, and it is certainly damaging PBase's reputation.
We NEED a filtering system.

I am also in agreement with the previous comments regarding the need for a NSFW filter on PBase. I find it embarrassing to send people to PBase, only to have them comment negatively on some of the more extreme sites. I have tried to implement the NSFW filter but it doesn't work. I hope that a solution agreeable to all can be achieved, soon!

I agree also with the NSFW filter : the more extreme sites should be censored.

This problem has been going on so long. It is time for a working solution. I have had family members mention the problem as they wander out from my galleries into Pbase. I try to avoid popular meta galleries because of this.

It is TIME for a solution. PLEASE

I agree that something needs to be done because it's downright embarrassing to refer anybody to Pbase to view my photos, especially here in Saudi Arabia, where a lot of the site is blocked anyway because of the objectionable content. Two or so weeks ago I happened to look at the Popular Galleries' page one and was shocked to see that almost every single gallery on it was nude photography. I was a bit concerned about my own gallery getting on that page with such company. I don't quite understand how the filter would work, but it sounds like a good idea, especially if it will stop people from referring to Pbase as PornBase. And just maybe my own Favorites page will be unblocked by the censors if that content is no longer available to the general public.

I agree completely...Emily and team, please do something about a NSFW FILTER. I never look at Popular Galleries now for all the reasons already mentioned and am loathe to think I am a member of a place now known as a where to view Porn.
I am entering my 12th year as a member here along with most who have added to this request..I think with respect, we deserve your attention to this.

I'd love a filter to be put in place to cull out the continuous flow of nudes and porn, please do something about it! I feel I can't ask anyone to view the popular galleries because there's always so many porn photos featured & at my age this certainly doesn't turn ME on  .

I have just been through the populars page after reading previous posts and expected every other image to be porn but this is far from the case. I clicked through the first six pages and only found one image that I would describe as porn.

But having said that, PBase should have a filter as flickr does and I know even at least one web site where aspiring photographic models show themselves has an NSFW filter.

But this filter has to be self regulatory, and who decides what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'. Some people may class a subtle nipple through a see-through top NSFW. I only mention this as last year I posted such a shot and because PBase doesn't have a filter I feel rather hesitant in posting anything more, despite me being comfortable with art nudes in general.

YES to having a filter!

I understood when I joined PBase in 2003 that anything considered unsuitable/pornographic by the team could be censored and could result in black-listing. Obviously things have changed since then. :(

I also agree with the sentiments of other Pbasers concerning nudity on Pbase. Some of the nude images being posted have gone beyond what I would consider to be "art" ~ there are some photographers who are posting some of the most vulgar, tasteless images of the female body. Since when did Pbase become PORN-BASE???? I no longer refer family and friends to my Pbase sites because I am too embarrassed to have them stumble upon other people's images of XXX pornography.

Emily and Slug ~ please take notice that there needs to be some filters put into place ASAP!!! Your response to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Thanks everyone for weighing in.

@clickaway, yes, the photographer has to rate their own photos and galleries. So it is up to them to label them from safe to NSFW. On other photo sites, if they don't or other people don't agree with their rating, they can report it to management and they make the final decision. It works pretty well. Everyone sees what they want.

If you want some enlightenment as to how bad this has gotten, Google "Pbase porn." There are pages of links. Some of these are really disgusting and actually show live sex acts. Fortunately, these never got voted to the top as far as I know. I'm not sure that's even legal. But the point isn't how gross they are as much as there seems to be a whole clique of porn viewers who have discovered Pbase Porn and are advertising it on the internet.

Here is a sample topic that showed up in the Google search. I did click on it to make sure it was what it said and it was. I don't advise anyone else clicking on it though.

Can I just add that this thread should really be under the Feature Requests section rather than Questions and Answers. Slug and Emily are more likely to see it, in theory!

Karen, I'm not sure, but as the original poster, you may be able to amend this.
