Need Help Resolving Statcounter and PBase pageviews

Post Sat Feb 08, 2014 1:10 am

I installed Statcounter back in 2007 with a lot of help from some brief web-acquaintance. That counter always disagreed somewhat with Pbase statistics, but that's OK.

But, on Feb 4, I uploaded a new gallery. Statcounter reported 16,000 total page views that day, Pbase only 8,500. That's not OK--too big a difference to ignore. Since I put that gallery up my Statcounter page views have increased by some 35,000 hits, but only 22,000 per Pbase. Can anyone help me resolve this big discrepancy?

I'm working with Pbase customer service--nice person, but a painfully slow process, and it stops on the weekend. Haven't heard back from Statcounter yet.

I'm wondering if my old Statcounter code could be at fault. I'd like to see it to compare to their currently supplied code, but don't know how to find it on Pbase. I don't remember how/where it was installed. I do remember that it was installed in only one place, and was supposed to count hits on all my galleries and images.

Any clue about how best to learn which (if either) counter is telling the truth and what could be wrong with the other?

Thanks
Jerry

Jerry,

I have had statcounter installed since 2008 and it has never agreed with the PBase stats. Often there are large discrepancies. I don't which stats, PBase or statcounter are correct, perhaps neither. You can search this forum for several discussions regarding stats. As far as I know the matter of the accuracy of PBase stats was never resolved, but I would be glad to be proven wrong.

As for your question, go to your profile page and click on account settings. The go to plugins. That is where your statcounter code is embedded.

I would be curious to learn how you fare with this. If you do get it resolved somehow, let us know.

Thanks for your response, Walter.

At this point (Feb 14) Statcounter shows several thousand more page-views than Pbase for the month of February. On low-count (200) days, either counter may be higher than the other, but on high count (5000+) days Statcounter is always significantly (1000s) higher than Pbase. I wonder if your experience is similar?

I've been in touch with both Pbase and Statcounter over this. I'm afraid Pbase support has not been much help so far. A few days ago I was told my issue has been upgraded to an administrator (whose name I was not given). I'm waiting for a response.

Meanwhile, I told Statcounter support of the issue. They checked my Pbase site, examined the Statcounter code, and confirmed that it was set up correctly. They went further by opening pages, and then confirming that all were counted without any false counts. They expressed confidence that my Statcounter results were accurate.

So, I'm left feeling that the Pbase page-views counter is not working right, at least for my pages. Or, that Statcounter and Pbase are measuring different things, though it is not obvious to me what is different.

I will keep the forum informed of progress.

Thanks for letting me know where to find the code. I will check that out tomorrow.

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Very interesting. My experience with Statcounter vs. PBase stats is just the opposite. PBase is always higher in count than Statcounter. In fact Stacounter is almost always significantly lower. As an example, aggregate daily page views for February 12 on PBase 5,328 and for Statcounter was 710. Discrepancies like this are fairly normal for my stats, hence my suggestion that possibly neither sets of stats are correct. I would be interested where you get with this Jerry, so please post any results you get.

Thanks,

Walter
