Farewell

PBase was a great concept -- a no-ads, no-frills site by and for photo buffs. However it has failed to evolve much beyond its birth. Indeed the site is almost identical to when I signed up in 2006 -- a 7-year period that saw the AJAX revolution and a new standard in interactive web sites. I've never felt that the Flickr's and Picasa's of the world had the same spirit and unclutteredness as PBase, but the ease-of-use and aesthetics of these sites has now left it far behind. Good luck to all.

Perhaps, that's why the majority of us love it. Personally, I'm sick of the 'latest and greatest'. My DOS based 1988 monochrome PC ran faster than the i7 I'm using now. If you've got something that works (and I'm not referring to the service interruptions in the past - but the format Pbase uses) sick with it. Their subscription numbers will tell them when the majority has had a change of heart.

Not sure why people feel the need to tell us they are leaving, especially with their first comment in the forum. Just leave, we don't care, at least I don't.

I believe the correct term is "trolling"

I also haven't been at all impressed with pbase performance over the years, yet still here since 2004, and have ceased bashing on them for minor glitches.
My Google search ranking, which brings in a fair amount of visits now after nine years, is easily worth the eleven cents per day that I pay to be here.

Adios, au revoir, sayonara, etc...

Heh! On one forum I frequent, farewell posts are deleted and the departure hastened.

"AJAX" ?? Interactive sites? Is this another drive-by interested in turning every website into entertainment for those with ADD?

I say take a look at some of the galleries Marissa "mardoli" has on PBase and tell me how she would do that on Flicker, etc. I see this as a place to display my pictures, sometimes related to projects going on in my real world, such that I can email a link to a friend or relative. I picked PBase for that in 2004, it worked -- and as of minutes ago, it still works. Sure there's some glitches and some occasional mysteries, but I don't see lack of features as a problem.

I, too, have been here since 2004. I don't upload much anymore but that is a problem with me, not with Pbase. Many of the fancy photo sites charge more in for a month than Pbase does for a year. The community here on the forum is not a bunch of snotty, snobby, know-it-alls. Folks around here seem to be friendly and helpful with the exception of but a few. I plan on being here a long, long time.

After flickr has ruined their interface. I'm glad I still have my pbase account. I don't mind if they don't change a thing here at pBase, I just hope it stays up and working as it has been.

I have to amend my comment in another thread about how Pbase could look a little more modern. No!!! I just logged onto Flickr. I am now a proud Pbase luddite. Flickr is hideous and totally nonfunctional now. There are over 40 pages of "I hate the new Flickr" on their forum in 24 hours. Don't change Pbase. But fix the problems. And get ready for a large influx of disgruntled Flickr users because people are threatening to close their accounts and find another site.

You are right Karen. If only PBase could stay like it is... and work flawlessly. Don't need extra gadgets.
But be fair, Flickr is now offering one TERAbyte for free, instead of 1Gb for PBase.
And they only have changed your front page. The heart remains the same.

Flawlessly? Thumbnails are not generating again. Have already written to help@pbase.com.

@ Water, I think he means he wants it to work flawlessly not that it is. I'm having issues with thumbnails too. I couldn't even upload yesterday.

But after viewing the Flickr train wreck, Pbase is so clean and pretty now.

And @ac, it isn't just my photostream that is different. Recent activity doesn't show all the things it used to. I can't find anything. Flickr had become totally unintuitive.

Yes, I don't pay there and 1T is wonderful. Tell that to all the people who did pay and now get NOTHING. No more Pro accounts. All it does is remove ads. And they've jacked the price up to $50 for the replacement for Pro and all you get is no ads.

I am loving Pbase right now. Will love it more when they fix but all is good here. :)

I like the new Flickr. GEEZ, I CAN'T BELIEVE I LIKE FLICKR!! I like it because I mostly use a tablet to view it. And I like it because I can use Flipboard and other magazine-like apps to look at stuff. I wish my Pbase galleries would work on Flipboard..
As for Pbase, it's still where I live and work. Photos I put on Flickr get very few views, but my Pbase photos get tons.. Works for me 8)

There are now 300 pages in less than 24 hours of the roll out from people who hate Flickr which leads me to believe most people are not using it on tablets or phones. Or if they are then they still hate it anyway. If you think your photos aren't getting many views there now, just wait for the mass exodus. It doesn't even make sense to pay them any more. They're encouraging people to get rid of their Pro accounts and open a free one. There's a great business model.

I don't spend much time on Flickr and it was mostly for the groups. I can't even look at it right now. The groups I'm on died anyway in the past 24 hours. All so some people can use their apps? I don't get it.

Flickr or not there is NO EXCUSE for the lack of response to major issues with Pbase. I am a long time member and still don't understand the elementary management of this site.

Flickr is a big place and the big mouths who are shouting and screaming about leaving and how much they hate the changes will do whatever they want to do, which is probably not much.
Flickr is appealing to a cohort (18-24 yr olds) who use mobile devices not just laptops, which they may not be using at all. That's the long and the short of it. It certainly is a "great business model."
My photos don't get views on Flickr because it's a big place and I don't spend time commenting and blabbing in the groups, and because I don't do much in the way of "talking" about my photos (descriptions, titles, etc.) so global searches don't find them. Whether or not i get views on Flickr isn't important. I was comparing Pbase and Flickr. I joined Flickr for the groups; now I like it for the interface.
........... To each their own .....
