The birds and the bees, and the flowers and the trees........

The subject matter of the Photo is not "work safe"..........

Oggetto: [PBase.com #111521] I can not upload some of my Album
Da: support@pbase.com

Hello,
The reason these two galleries do not appear in recent is because they have been blocked
from public galleries on PBase. Galleries are blocked if we find images that are not work safe
or if the subject matter of the gallery is not "work safe". You may find other galleries that are
not work safe, but we will remove them once we find them. If you have other questions,
please let me know.
Thanks,
Jehan

"Work safe?" What does that mean exactly?

For my company it means that any of our 16,000 employees world wide can open an image that does not offend their personal or moral tastes or that of a co-worker that might view it unintentionally; or is against government regulations or local religious beliefs, teachings & practices.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the explanation. I get it. Nice idea. Completely subjective though.... what offends you, may not offend me; what offends the next guy doesn't offend the girl next door; the Jewish guy is offended but it, but the Muslim down the corridor thinks it's good. So does the Catholic gentleman walking by. The Chinese fellow couldn't give a damn, but the Tibetan is outraged. OOh boy. If we applied a test like that at pbase (and did not leave it in the hands of an "admin,") there'd be no pictures on pbase.

My five cents worth on the whole nudity / pornography debate? There is no solution, just compromise. I like the idea of self-regulation (a kind of classification system so that I can warn viewers about some of my photographs if I want to), but unless everybody uses it the whole things fails. And if we make it compulsory, then we will have fallen straight into the censorship trap. Knowing human nature - this one has no solution. Learn to look away. It's what you would do in nature. We argue about this stuff as if there must be a solution : get over it. There isn't one. The internet did not come to make everything easy and controllable and pigeon-holeable. It represents the ultimate liberty - including the liberty to offend, insult, abuse and irritate. The only way to stop it is to switch it off. I do so frequently. But I am not ready to discard it just because a couple of things about it get up my nose.

Of course it's subjective, this debate has gone on for years and will continue. It's highly unlikely that there will compromise as the issue is highly polarized and also clearly defined & described in some religions and cultures, regardless what anyone outside thinks is reasonable.

It no longer matters for my company, we recently implemented a commercial screening & blocking service on our world wide network, and PBase is on the black list (blocked URL). PBase is also on the black list at the school my grandkids attend. The reason for this is that PBase does not have a simple user classification system, or do any type of screening for adult content. A simple system that the user controls, with a feedback/complaint button requesting a review would probably work OK to improve PBase's classification. When our company implemented this system last year, I requested the service provider to do a review and update of PBase, they did and it's still blocked.

I don't personally care if someone posts not work safe material, I prefer not to see a bunch of crap posted for shock value, and that too is subjective. Without a system for at least voluntary flagging & filtering, a lot more people are impacted than we may be aware of. This flagging & filtering thing has been brought up numerous times over the years with no response, or even a reply by PBase. It's clear they simply don't care. So we'll limp along under the banner of freedom of speech and expression, as each individual defines these rights and entitlements.

Weeellll... there was a reply, for all the good it did.

See Emily's reply to Ray Akey in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17917&start=15

And yes, that date is correct... January 2006, 4 years ago.

(Does anyone remember that old song "Promises, Promises"? It's going around in my head at the moment for some reason.)

I'm a fan of the "filter" system; it would probably still be necessary to have some kind of Admin-override for people who refuse to implement the filter flag, but I think that most people are likely to be more reasonable than not especially if the reasons for the filter (to avoid the black listing of PBase) is explained clearly and regularly.

Thanks for that Alan, I either missed it or my "senior moments" are extending beyond minutes, or both. 4 years, that predates the printing & framing announcement. Geeze Louise, how difficult can it be to add a user selectable content system - a few radio buttons, and maybe a site review request button that users and guests can click on if they don't think something should be viewed by everyone? The obvious answer is more than 4 years unfortunately.

I won't renew my membership until a filter system is implemented that allows galleries to be included among the most popular that are considered "controversial." This
includes what some call political galleries. I prefer less censoring. I also prefer a filter that allows the user to eliminate certain galleries based on content. I thought that slug was working on such a filter as mentioned earlier in this thread. We used to have a separate link for political galleries on the main page, but that was removed. Why would someone want to pay to post here when their galleries do not have an equal chance of ending up among the most popular ones due to censorship. Well, maybe I would if I paid a reduced fee for reduced services.

Alan has pointed out that this is a feature PBase is working on. Possibly subject to considerable refinement judging by the timescale. Maybe we could know how it's coming along.

As long as pbase does nothing about these (and they've been there and expanding for many moons) I guess "anything goes."

I think you should separate those two (nudity...pornography). They are not the same.
