contests - how to find out about?

How does one learn what contests there are and how one participates in them?

You could try the Weekly and Monthly Assignments at http://www.fredmiranda.com These are interesting (and quite taxing) image contests wherein the assignment is voted on by its members. This week's contest for Weekly Assignment is "Backlit". Images must be taken in the week of the contest (not archived images) so it keeps you on your toes.
