uploading pics

Hello everyone,,,,,recently I was at a party and of course took the digital camera with me....... I originally had 196 mb of space used, so i purchase and additional 100 mb to cover the pictures I was going to upload. I assume that would be enough as the files were basicly the same as I loaded before. (6mb fine from fuji 602)
After the upload the amount of space used went from 196mb to 496mb, and I dont understand why such an increase?
The end result was that people were able to open the site and the file, and could view them......
Just dont understand the sudden increase in space used.
