Very good. Several factors make online evaluation of sharpness difficult. Images are sized small, jpg compression muddles things a bit, web browsers and pbase isn't always the best for maintaining sharp detail. But still, this looks good. At least it demonstrates the lens can produce sharp results. That doesn't mean it's always going to, even if all the other causes of sharpness are not a factor. But for all practical purposes it's pretty safe to say if you don't get good sharpness it's some of the other factors we've discussed that are to blame.

I second Steve's comments. Macro PLUS extension tubes woooo! As you can see, the depth of field doesn't quite cover the thickness of a feather at that range.

There is a macro technique which I admit I've never tried where you get a coupler that allows you to attach another camera lens to the front of the one on your camera. Purportedly at greater than 1:1, the reversed second lens provides a better optimized field. No doubt somewhere out here on the 'net there's some discussion about it.
Ah yes: http://digital-photography-school.com/reverse-lens-macro-close-up-photography-lesson-3

The coupler/adapters are simple passive rings like a step-up filter adapter and not all that expensive. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Reversing-Rings/ci/3065/N/4077634538 Some of the rings on that page allow reversing a single lens on the body -- they generally cost more!

(Just to add to your arsenal of tricks. :D )

HI Steve and Dave

Thanks for the comments.

I don't know why the image in my post isn't the full sized one that I linked to, or thought I linked to which is most likely something having to do with the thread in the Q&A forum regarding being able to view orignal sized images, but it is a much better image to view.

I still have a long way to go, but this makes me feel more encouraged about using the lense.

Yeah, adding the extension tubes is a bit overkill my curiousity won out and instead of sticking to the basics with getting to know the lens better I wanted to try even closer. I did show some restraint though and didn't put my 2X teleconverter on the stack as well. :D

It could well have been full size. I'm doing this on my iPad, which shows pretty much everything full screen no matter what size it is on pbase. I wasn't inferring anything about it was less than sharp. I have just seen from my own photos that even on my big screen (24") I don't ge the sharpness on pbase I see in Lightroom.

You brought up something that made me wonder about something I haven't thought about before. How things would work differing the order. In other words, Lens>TC>Tube>Camera vs Lens>Tube>TC>Camera. The later may not work at all, but who knows? I may have to try it sometime.

Interesting thought. I may experiment with that one as well at some point in time.

Hi,
I just saw this discussion. I have both Tamron macro lenses, the 90mm and the 180mm and am very satisfied with them. Looking at your Mums photos, and the exif of three of the images, I think that you should try shooting with a wider aperture and faster shutter speed.

I can tell you that both Tamron macro lenses have tendency to hunt in autofocus mode, but the good part is that that both are sharp when using the right settings.

Here are some photos I took with the 90mm: http://www.pbase.com/amoxtli/macro_1

Hi Walter

Thanks for the info.

It is my lack of experience with, and understanding of the technique of using, the lens that has been causing my dissatisfaction with the results and I am slowly coming to grips with the requirements and am starting to get better results.
