Here is another example of a shot I was able to take hand-held instead of tripod mounting. Here I am using the EF100 2.8 USM macro and the ring flash.

I have to admit that I cheated though. I took the ring flash off the front of the lens, and held it off to the side to increase the shadows. I still had good automatic exposure through the TTL II though.
