16 seconds in one moment

Post Thu Oct 07, 2004 11:02 pm

I've just stumbled across Simon Kirk's photo with this title here http://www.pbase.com/image/25844179

What about we all do a 16 second exposure on a theme day. Maybe easier with the darker days in the northern hemisphere. Not sure how restrictive this will be on some cameras, but it would give us a chance to learn how slow our shutter will go and get some experimentation going.

Hi... I did take a look at the original and looks like it has some pixles problem. I have an Olympus 3040 (&the picture was taken using a 5050). I have learn that temperature is a mayor issue when using Olympus for larger expositions. I mean, you won´t have so much troubles with broken pixels and stuff, so be advice in case any of you want to try it. Anyway, with a good post processing you can fix the "holes", but sometimes they´re so many that the result won´t be good.

I guess newer, bigger cameras have less problem with that.

// By the way, with older models (mine is from 2000) you might get problem with the same pixels after the shoot.. they can persist. And that´s also a matter where ambient T° in involved.

Cheers guys and thanks Ray i have a feeling a ND filter my be added to my collection for the idea the concept is a good one and i think we will have to give it a go!
I went back and checked the original Jpeg and there are no hot pixels in the image, at full size you can see the beginnnings of the star trails on each star, that camera did later develop a real problem with hot pixels but has since been replaced under waranty and i have a new one in the bag as back up to the D100.

It's been a while since we last had a theme... so I'd be willing to try it! Mind you some (most?) p&s can't do 16s.
