Political noise

Post Fri Aug 20, 2004 6:44 pm

Is anyone else here tired of the political noise images on the popular pages? I'm not talking about photos of candidates and events, I'm talking about the slogans and cartoons and such from both sides.

It's a shame to see such drivel in place of some of the actual good work that is out there.

I just voted for every non-political gallery on the first 4 pages in an attempt to move some actual photography up on the list.

I understand what you mean. Those galleries are often very good to me but there is another problem wich is the acumulation of votes on the other galleries, wich will last forever in the ALL TIME populars.

I understand that more voting will keep them far for a while but the will keep on coming until the freakin election. I understand there is nothing to say about the authors of those galleries; they can post anything. The problem is the vote and the meaning of the vote that users give to them.

So I will propose another solution; create a feature wich allow the owner of the gallery to decide if they want to recieve votes. I mean "votes disabled" in a single gallery. The reasons are simply; those galleries are becoming forums but there are also forums for that and there is no sanity in monopolizing what should be the best of this global massive photo community.

Please... I think it is quite urgent. There is no way of control over the votes, but there is no reason to force a user to recieve votes. Last week there where only 3 or 4 Us election related galleries amoung the first 8 (50%). This week we have 5 and I´m pretty sure that if any other user begins another there will be soon on the top (as you can check there no is no bush/kerry gallery under the top ones; they don´t die!, they keep recieving votes for public attention)

Lets me say I find the political stuff annoying. One thing that really bugs me is that most of what is posted in images that were not taken by the people posting them. This is against the "terms of services agreement" with Pbase.

From the terms of service statement.
"Acceptable content
Upload your own work.
Do not upload images you take from other web sites. Those are copyrighted. Do not upload pornography. It is copyrighted. Collect it on your own hard drive."

Uploading images taken by someone else (the copy right holder) is against the rules. Plus it might cause the poster some other problems. Some photographers get just a bit upset when others post there work with out a proper licensing agreement. If the work is registered I think the minimum damages is set at $30,000 by statute in the USA. It can go higher.

this is a bit farther down on the service agreement.
"
PBASE reserves the right to remove or categorize images in any way it sees fit.
If a user uploads something of questionable legality or taste, it may be removed without notice.
Users agree to accept all liability for the legality of content they submit and will not hold PBASE responsible for any damages that result."

If you see something that may fit the remove rules complain to the higher ups maybe they will take it down.

It's Beyond What You Posted

The problem is not only the clogging the Popular Gallery meta with politics, not making room for others...it's now a "war" of sorts between three people. Slug needs to step in. He never steps in when needed, and issues escalate.

Most of you know what and whom I'm speaking of....the parties involved here....this is gone too far....

I just quickly scanned through the first few pages of the popular galleries. It seems that the galleries in question have disappeared from the listings. Woohoo!

May be we should just do away with the popular galleries...that way take the competitiveness out of the whole things...after all art is supposedly a subjective thing and the voting are also very political as well...why not just enjoy our photography and sharing them...as we do in PAD, which I enjoy participate tremendously.

I almost tend to agree here. I like the idea of a level playing field. I can also understand Slug wanting more features to draw others to the site. I know there was a political area devised, but there are still those that are slipping through.

Maybe just have ALL galleries in a rotating "Featured Gallerie of the Week" situation.

Oh well, I'm just happy with my little space...
