How to make a frame with shadow?

Post Sat Jan 29, 2005 7:17 pm

Hi, I am new in this photo editing forum.
I wonder how I make a frame with shadow, -like the following photo:

I know how to add the small black around and the wider white, -here is one of my own photos:

So, -I just need to know how to add the shadow. I think that looks very nice. Thanx in advance :)

The shadow is just a drop shadow on the picture.

Bottom layer = White
Top Layer = Picture + Blending Option of Drop Shadow

Compare the Drop Shadow to Inner shadow if you want to harden it or soften it more.

Load a picture and look for the layers pallete. If you don't see it hit F7 and it will blink on/off.

1) Now copy the picture into a new layer (Layer -> Duplicate Layer)

2) Expand the canvas (Image -> Expand Canvas) do it either by Percent or by pixels to make the background the size you want. Set the expand color to White

3) Go over to the layer menu and select the layer created in step 1.
Right click on it and select "Blending Options". You will find a check box for "Drop shadow". Turn it on and then muck around with the settings until you like it.

-------------------------------
4) Go pick up a book by Scott Kelby (Photoshop for Digital Photographers). If you don't know how to use layers you are missing a lot of the fun and power of Photoshop. :)

Jezz - Nice job for your first attempt. You can automate these steps via what PS calls an "action", check the manual for creating, saving and using actions. Additionally, a lot of digital folks have created great actions and provide them for free at Action Central, check it out:
